Original publisher's beige paper wrappers. 6" x 9 1/2." Nineteen pages, complete (except for a few portions of text, described below). Pages are clean and intact overall but there is light age toning throughout, darkening and soiling on first few pages and verso of last page, and a chip measuring about 1" x 1 1/2" on first page and a few of the last pages. The chip affects text on Pages 17-19. Page 18 has some loss of text, namely, two numbers that show the number of war steamers owned by Denmark and Austria, respectively. The affected text on Pages 17 and 19 can still be made out or inferred; the affected texts on Page 17 are "headers" about the number of vessels engaged in trade; the affected texts on Page 19 are the names of countries, namely, Sardinia, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, and Brazil. Among the countries or regions reported on are Great Britain, France, Russia, Turkey, Egypt, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Brazil, Sardinia, Spain, Two Sicilies, Portugal, and Mexico. George Bancroft (1800-1891) was an American historian and politician. From 1845-1846, he served as Secretary of the Navy under President James K. Polk's administration. During his time as Secretary of the Navy, Bancroft established the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Bancroft later served as a diplomat to Great Britain, Prussia, and the German Empire..
